Before you jump in and reformat the hard drive, visit the Sony website and find out if they have device drivers for Windows XP.
However you might not be able to find xp drivers for the motherboard devices ie. One day my keyboard suddenly responded strangely. Some keys do not response. Some keys respond as other keys. Horrified, I reboot the computer. A lot of noises beep-beep-beep during the start up process. But the computer can start. But the keyboard problem persist. This beep-beep-beep sounds like a stuck key on the keyboard.
Try replacing the keyboard first and if you still experience the same problem, apparently there is a problem with the keyboard controller. Sometimes the screen goes off when playing film or music but the film or music sound is still playing, and I still can see the statement of the film still moving on in a very dim image.
I am sure that my laptop is normally working except the backlight. When this problem happens, I close the lid and my laptop goes to standby mode,after that I open the lid and the screen it lit again, Sometimes I have to close and open several times to get it lit back. One thing very special, If I open the lid lower or equal 90 degree, It just flash in milisecond and then turns dark.

I am sure that when dismantling the laptop, you have accidentally removed the tape sticked on the IB inverter board. The IB is usually laid inside a transparent cubic plastic tube located under screen. Please take the IB out of the tube and wrap it with transparent sellotape around it as spiral shape from head to end till IB is fully wrapped. Remember not to remove any sellotape sticked on mainboard.

From your description I assume that you have a fried component on the motherboard and replacing the cooling fan will not help.
Dear cj, I was also fearing that a component on the mother board is fried. However, when I followed your clues and checked both the motherboard and cooling fan area, I found out something interesting. Actually the smoke was coming from the dust gathered in the cooling fan area and I am still not sure about the sparks. Anyway, after cleaning the 1 inch thik layer of dust from the vent area everything is back to normal.
Even the display is ok. Is there a method of reattaching it, or should I find a replacement keyboard? I discovered one of my RAM chips was bad, indeed. On one occasion, I noticed the timer had not progressed and the progress bar looked erratic but working. I lifted the laptop with my right hand grasping the right side of the keyboard. The timer had jumped to its correct time and the progress bar displayed as expected. I put the laptop down and the timer froze.
The progress bar went wonky again. I was thinking of putting rubber padding underneath the mainboard where the ATI chip is located. I was also thinking about taking the fan and heatsink off and putting one or even two thin copper or aluminum squares with thermal grease between the ATI chip and the heatsink.

Could be software related problem. Have you tried reinstalling device drivers for the modem and LAN? If still no help, most likely you have a faulty motherboard and it has to be replaced. Test the power adapter first. Make sure the laptop is getting power from the wall. I have barely used it and left it in pristine condition. If I move the top of the laptop toward me, sometimes the image comes back to normal. If I move it backward, then the image freezes and goes white again.
External monitor works fine. I opened the top and bottom of the laptop, and checked the connection on both sides, it seems fine. Is it possible that the cable is getting squished in the hinge.. Lately I have been using the laptop without the LCD bezel, and I removed the left speaker to give the cable more breathing room.
I think this is ridiculous! Have you ever seen something like this? Your description sounds like a problem with the LCD screen. Apparently there is a bad solder joint somewhere on the LCD controller and it fails intermittently.

I suggest you clean it using cotton buds soaked in soapy water then lubricate the fan bearing with castor oil using an injection needle.

Hey all, i hav sony vaio VGN-s series with 1. When i slapped it little, it starts working… and after few days… it power on but nothing on screen….. Nice resource! Need to swap hard drive. Could be memory failure. Try replacing the memory module with a new one and test the laptop again. Do you have two memory modules in your laptop? Try removing them one by one. If one of the modules is bad, the laptop will start properly when the bad module is removed.

So the trick is to keep prising the keyboard at the end where the 3 screws were and it will eventually unstick. This is Khondker from Bangladesh. It was working fine for 4 months. But now a problem has appeared. The problem is — When I switch on or power my laptop. It starts. The power indicator light remains green. But my Lcd screen appears black. I reinstalled my system, but no progress. At the time of booting, my screen shows light for 1 second, after that it remains black.
If I plug other monitor it shows the screen there properly. But my laptop screen remains black. The bottom panel was easy enough to remove, but that only gets me access to the RAM and the Wireless card. Go to the device manager and find the webcam in there.
Right click on the webcam and uninstall the driver. Now reboot the laptop and let it detect the webcam and reinstall the drivers.

Have you tried calling the official service center? It worked perfectly fot 2 weeks, and then vertical red stripes appeared on the screen. My local technician said it was impossible to repair: something to do with a tfs? Searching on the internet, I found that there is a recurrent grapic card problem on vaio fz series. I have looked all over for problems, and apparently Vaios have a lot of problems related to the trackpad. Maybe the trackpad simply disabled? Also take a look at the trackpad software installed on your laptop.
The problem is that when I power up with or without battery the screen displays Vaio logo momentarily and ever so quickly fades away. I cannot even get output to an external monitor to view bios or the os. Take a closer look at the laptop screen after it fades away. Can you see a very faint image? If yes, try replacing the inverter board.
I am only abel to see something if I set ON but the BIOS come out 2 times and all strange letters while in the external monitor it is showed perfect. Thanks for this interesting page. Can you get image on the external monitor? Use an external USB mouse. Right click on the touchpad and uninstall it. Restart the laptop and let it re-detect the touchpad. There are not many parts you can upgrade, except memory, hard drive and in some cases CPU. This requires OS reinstall or cloning. Both the keyboard and touchpad have stopped working, although F2 and F8 work when booting. New hard drive fitted with fresh install, this did not help. Not a very common model apparently. Might as well do an overhaul if I can get the relevant manual. Look for two screws securing the DVD drive on the bottom of the laptop.
If you not sure which screws securing the DVD drive, try removing all screws located under the drive. After that try pulling the DVD drive from the laptop. Now it GPFs regularly. A memory diagnostic did not turn up anything with the RAM.
